Kubernetes Unpacked - A guided tour

A one-day introductory Kubernetes course delivered through live demonstrations and hands-on labs. The course builds a coherent picture starting from containers and runtimes, moving through the Kubernetes API, objects and controllers, and on to Operators and Custom Resource Definitions. Participants learn the mechanisms and relationships between platform components, as well as the role of CRI, CNI, CSI, logging, and observability in the cloud-native ecosystem.

Course outline

  • Module 1: Kubernetes Foundations - from containers to Kubernetes, Kubernetes history and role in cloud-native architectures, architecture and components, Kubernetes distributions
  • Module 2: Kubernetes API & Core Concepts - imperative vs. declarative, authentication, authorization, and RBAC, Kubernetes objects (Pod, Deployments, StatefulSets, etc.), controllers
  • Module 3: Kubernetes Operators - intro to Operators, Custom Resources and Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), controllers vs. Operators
  • Module 4: Kubernetes pillars - CRI, CNI, and CSI, Kubernetes logging and observability, Kubernetes tooling and ecosystem, conclusions & Q&A

Skills you will gain

  • Understanding the relationship between containers, runtimes, and orchestration with Kubernetes
  • Confidently navigating the essential concepts and components of a Kubernetes platform
  • Choosing between imperative and declarative approaches depending on the operational context
  • Understanding how identity, access, and permissions are managed through the Kubernetes API and RBAC
  • Correctly interpreting Kubernetes objects such as Pod, Deployment, and StatefulSet
  • Understanding how controllers automate application state management
  • Differentiating classic controllers from Kubernetes Operators
  • Understanding the role of CRDs and custom resources in extending the platform
  • Correlating CRI, CNI, and CSI with the cluster's runtime, network, and storage layers
  • Identifying the essential components for logging, observability, and operation of the Kubernetes ecosystem

Who should attend

  • DevOps Engineers and Site Reliability Engineers
  • Platform Engineers and Cloud Engineers
  • System Administrators moving to cloud-native infrastructure
  • Software Developers delivering containerized applications
  • Solution Architects and Infrastructure Architects
  • Technical Leads and Engineering Managers
  • IT professionals evaluating Kubernetes distributions
  • Kubernetes users who want a grounded perspective on the internals

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of containerization technologies (taking the Docker Fundamentals course is recommended)
  • Familiarity with using the command line in Linux (commands, arguments, file system navigation) - not mandatory but helpful
  • Familiarity with JSON and/or YAML configuration and data exchange formats - not mandatory but helpful
