Online exams and remote thesis defences for universities

Examena is online exam software that runs a university’s exam sessions, remote thesis defences and video exams in a single system. Students confirm their identity in the mObywatel app, Poland’s official digital identity app, and take the exam under online proctoring by Examena Proctor. The examination board then receives the official record and the recording. Examena integrates with USOS, the student information system used by most Polish universities.

What Examena offers your university

Identity verification with mObywatel

Students confirm their identity in a few seconds, without uploading photos of their ID card. The mObywatel integration was developed in cooperation with Poland’s Central Informatics Centre (COI).

Online proctoring with Examena Proctor

Examena Proctor monitors students on video, locks down the student’s computer for the duration of the exam, keeps an event log and lets the examination board review the recording afterwards. The university sets the level of proctoring to match the stakes of each exam.

Remote thesis defences and video exams

The examination board, the student, the recording, the official record and the grade are all in one place, with no need for an external video-calling app. Thesis defences and oral exams are fully documented from start to finish.

AI-supported question banks

Examena draws randomised question sets and supports question variants. Answers are marked against clear criteria, and every student has a route to appeal.

Integration with university systems

Examena connects to USOS, LDAP, single sign-on and Moodle, and offers an open API. The platform complies with the WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines.

Cloud exam environments

Practical IT exams run in cloud environments launched on demand, so the university does not have to buy any hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Is identity verification with mObywatel mandatory?

No. The university decides which exams require identity verification and which only require students to sign in with their university account.

Can a thesis defence be held entirely in Examena?

Yes. The examination board, the student and the recording are all in one system, and the official record is generated from data captured during the defence.

What happens if a student loses their connection during an exam?

Examena saves answers continuously, and when the student signs back in, they pick up where they left off. The examination board sees the interruption in the event log.

Does Examena integrate with USOS?

Yes. Groups, exam dates and results are exchanged with USOS through the integration, so the dean’s office does not have to re-enter anything manually.
